Just spent a super weekend in Llandudno, with the first Llawn Art Festival, a totally wild event. I was really lucky to be able to contribute an installation to Haus of Helfa, an exciting new direction for me.
Great to have plenty of room for big pictures! The title is ‘Quebec’ and it is based on the research for my ‘City of Ottawa’ book: at the beginning of this year I unexpectedly found a suicide note by one of the Master who captained the sailing ship, upsetting the conclusions I’d come to. This led me to reflect on the limits of historical research. There comes a moment when every historian makes an imaginative leap from the data discovered to judgements based on his or her own preconceptions, intellectual fashions, cultural norms etc. So it is both an emotional response to a shocking discovery, and a reflection on historical truth.
It’s a kind of a version of roadside shrine, a labour of love on my part.
It’s there for another weekend, details available on http://www.helfagelf.com.
