The best things don’t always come in the most exciting wrappers!

The butterfly photographed here is a grayling (thanks to Lorna Gray for help with identification).  It is easy to miss as it always has its wings closed when it is standing still.  However when you look closely you can see it has a jagged lightning strike marking across its wing and a vivid black spot.  When you catch a glimpse of it flying you can just spot that it is coloured anything from dark brown to a vivid chestnut.  It is fascinating and frustrating that it such an unassuming creature, which modestly hides its loveliness from common sight.

  1. We’ve been seeing a lot of butterflies here at Crumps Barn as I’m sure Lorna has told you. Haven’t seen a Grayling yet. Will keep a look out.

Graylings like very sparse vegetation. I think things are too lush at Crumps Barn for them!
